The Different Members of a Reefer Trucking Fleet

With our fleet of refrigerated units and experience with reefer trucking, we find many of our clients are curious about how these refrigeration containers work. How do they manage to keep the cargo cool and fresh for arrival at the final destination? There are actually several different refrigeration methods used for the various kinds of refrigerated cargo units, including trucks. Here is an overview of some of these types of technology you might encounter as you look to ship your products to customers around the world. There is a great deal that goes into determine refrigeration levels. The food must be kept cool enough to prevent ripening and spoiling, but also not too cool so that it freezes and consequently spoils.
The first type of refrigerated truck or other cargo container is simply thickly insulated to help keep the items cool, while also insulated to help prevent staleness. These types of refrigerated trucks are most commonly used for transporting fruit and other food that should be kept as cool and fresh as possible relatively locally. For longer distances, it is more common to use a truck with a refrigeration unit. We always make sure that our clients and their products get the service they require to get the job done well.
Other food, however, needs to remain at much cooler temperatures. For this reason, there are a variety of cooling systems available to keep foods at safe temperatures inside a reefer trucking unit. One common system is known as ice cooling. This system uses simple ice to help to keep the food cool so that it does not ripen too quickly and spoil before reaching the final destination.
A second system is cooling through carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide can be used either as dry ice or as a liquid cooling agent. Both options use predetermined levels and measurements to make sure that the food is held a consistent temperature throughout transport.
A third system is with liquid nitrogen. These systems are usually connected to a system that consistently measures the temperature of the cargo container. If the temperature reaches a predetermined number within the reefer trucking unit, the system will automatically release a mist of the liquid nitrogen to lower the temperature back down to acceptable levels.
Many of these refrigeration units are controlled by boxes that you can see behind the cap of the truck before the cargo container. This technology has truly revolutionized our food options. People are able to each a variety of fruits and vegetables year round, no matter where they live. It is possible to bring apples, bananas, avocados, and more to the dinner tables of Americans, even when their local temperature does not rise above freezing. This availability is because of the transportation capabilities of refrigerated units and reefer trucking companies. Our company prides itself on its reefer fleet and is excited to help you and your product get to your consumers on time and wherever they may be.
